Drying Workshop – communal creative space

Location
Debrecen

Searching for forgotten values, the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Debrecen came upon an old tanner’s workshop in Debrecen’s city centre, in which they saw the potential for a communal creative centre for students and members of the town’s other art schools and creative groups. The building was constructed in the early 1900s and was the drying workshop and home of a tanner’s family. In order to support the project, the local government (which owns the building) leased it to the university for an indefnite duration. After this, the department invited concepts for the utilisation of the building and had a working drawing drawn up. The four workshop spaces of the drying building will function as an incubator, while the courtyard at the front will be covered to serve as a venue for exhibitions and other events.
