Newill Academy is a nursery and primary school for the socially disadvantaged in Ghana. It was launched in 2010, when a Ghanaian teacher living in London founded a nursery in an empty storage building next to his mother’s house. As the institution grew and more children attended, the building proved insufcient and some of the classes were held on the corridors and under simple roofs erected on the schoolyard. In collaboration with the local leadership, an enthusiastic group of Hungarian architects further developed the previously drawn up local plans by including the aspects of sustainability and the climatic conditions and began to raise funds for the implementation. The construction of the school is carried out intermittently, during the school holidays, with the help of local experts and international volunteers. The money that was used to fnance the construction works so far were obtained through an online public fundraising campaign, private donations and contributions made by local businesses.
