The network of shelters in Szeklerland’s mountain region was established to cater to the minimal comfort of hikers, at times supplemented with site-specifc functions such as an ornithological observation point or a mountain rescue base. The client chose a standard design that allows fast construction and which can be adapted based on the desired function, the plan of the building site, the soil research and the orientation. The shelter at Csíkkarcfalva is situated at the bottom of the Harghita Mountains, about three kilometres from the village, on the site of former baths built around the local boron water spring. The mass and materials of the shelter allude to the traditional barns of the region and the seasonal shepherds’ abodes of the mountain pastures.
