The architects’ set out to create a memorial that is free of narrative and pathos, and which becomes both an imperceptible part and a powerful symbol of its surroundings, transforming the garden itself into a space for remembrance. Thus the space takes on the role of a shared university garden for yesterday’s war victims and today’s university citizens. The symbol is simultaneously total (connecting the two bordering streets, and imperceptible. It permits absence, but also proximity, understanding and remembrance. The memorial was the result of work by the project team formed to implement the winning designs submitted by the Graduate School of the Master Architects Association.
