The architects wanted to build something for the faithful living in the vicinity of the housing estate in Lágymányos (one of Budapest’s neighbourhoods) that had been missing: a building with its main function being that of a church but one that would also operate as a community centre. They also wanted to design a garden and a square with benches, wherever there were paths. The concept was to design an ensemble of buildings into the abstract environment of Lágymányos – now sadly stripped of its historical milieu and thus an uninterrupted urban development – the architectural and artistic rendering of which would be based on a subtle balance between contemporary tools and a traditional spatial structure. “The Church’s deepest nature is expressed in her three-fold responsibility: of proclaiming the word of God, celebrating the sacraments, and exercising the ministry of charity.” (Pope Benedict XVI)
