The conceptual objectives of the reconstruction of Széll Kálmán Square were rationalisation, humanisation, versatility and sustainability. A primary objective was to divide the space up into easily navigable usage zones, to ensure ease of orientation, the shortest routes of travel, and the elimination of unmonitored areas and blind alleys. Architecturally, this was achieved with a metro station that is open from all sides, ordered platform shelters and signage, and outdoor lighting during the evening hours. The quality of the built and physical environment improved, and it became more people-centred, as the previous dominance of mass transport systems was replaced with a composition of spaces for travelling, resting, waiting, meeting and consuming.
