“The magnifcence of aristocratic representation and the high level of agricultural knowledge accumulated at the Szirmay– Waldbott Castle earned it wide-spread renown in its time. Trying to fnd its place in the region, now it functions as a visitor centre. The approach taken to its renovation reflected the intention of its original builders: to preserve the values created by the ancestors and keep the scale of the development to a feasible level. (…) The reconstruction project began with the surveying of the facade followed by a comprehensive assessment of the monument features: the analysis of the wall fabric, the restoration potential of the paintings and timber elements as well as fnding architectural and scientifc documentation. The historical analysis was supplemented with a fortunate and rare opportunity: the Szirmay and Waldbott families preserved the castle in their memory and stories and thus contributed to the success of the renovation with their knowledge and at times even with the objects they had kept.” (Rita Tuczai)
