The team won the commission for the project at a national competition announced by the local government of Budafok. The building they designed is in close interaction with the square in front of it, which functions as a kind of extension to the market and will provide a venue for festivals and various other events. The market building has a roof system supported by pillars according to a raster and surrounded by a brick wall. The roof system is composed of flat roof surfaces of different heights arranged like a chessboard. As each roof surface has a different height, the ‘gaps’ in-between them let in a continuous flow of air, thus providing the ventilation for the hall, while natural light can also flood in. The mounted stalls have a pavilion-like design.
