The “thatched cube” design concept of Artkazal (‘Art Bale’) blends the architecture of the past and future, while rising to meet the challenges of the modern age and observing the rules of ecologically sound design. The designers have used the reeds not as a roof covering, but as a ventilated, climatic façade. The thermal insulation is provided by the double layer of thatch that also ensures the structure’s breathability, in addition to which an extra 25 cm layer of ventilated reed matting has been ftted to the building as a climatic covering to shield the building from the summer heat. The building is heated and cooled by electrical heat pumps powered by GEO-rate electricity and solar panels. The optimal orientation ensures the most efcient use of solar energy.
