Location
Badacsonytomaj

The location – the plateau on the hillside above the small town – is an age old holy site. Once a Pauline monastery stood here with a spring nearby, its water is still suitable for drinking. The simple form of the chapel built with the basalt that was gained from the mountain creates the impression of having stood at its present location since time immemorial. Its vaulted interior is home to Erzsébet Udvardi’s altarpiece enveloped in golden tones and depicting the scene in which King Stephen offers the holy Crown to the Virgin Mary. Every year at the noon of 20th of August, the king’s initials, engraved into the stone floor, are illuminated by the light shining through an opening in the vault. The small chapel is visited by the locals and by tourists alike.
